Yesterday a number of Congress changes were passed which now makes it legal to Jailbreak smartpohones.
The Congress changes directly circumvent digital rights management schemes as dictated in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and are set to kick in on 28th October and are to be in force for the next 3 years. However, Jailbreaking Tablets will remain prohibited.
As Ars Technica explains:
For the next three years, you’ll be allowed to jailbreak smartphones but not tablet computers. You’ll be able to unlock phones purchased before January 2013 but not phones purchased after that. It will be legal to rip DVDs to use an excerpt in a documentary, but not to play it on your iPad.
